There may be a special section for foreign spam in Google Messages

Google has been putting a lot of effort into making Android a more secure operating system for all users, tackling everything from phishing schemes to vulnerabilities. Several security measures are integrated into Google Messages to shield you from possible SMS scam victims. It appears that the firm is planning to fortify Google Messages with an extra layer of protection in the shape of an international spam bin.

For a number of reasons, users may get unsolicited foreign messages. Depending on whether you registered for a particular service or, worse, your number was made public due to a database attack. Even though they are frequently not phishing attempts but rather commercial spam, that doesn't make them any less bothersome.

The new "cross-country" folder in Google Messages would collect all spam from abroad.

As noted by Android Authority code researcher Assemble Debug, Google is attempting to resolve this issue. The massive Mountain View company would add a new folder to Google Messages that would actively "capture" spam from around the world. The research states that one of the primary ways the system determines whether an SMS is spam is by looking up if it originates from an unknown source. Therefore, you shouldn't be concerned about missing messages from relatives or acquaintances who live abroad.

The source discovered the folder, messages.android_20240923_01_RC00.phone_samsung_openbeta_dynamic, in the most recent Google Messages beta build. The APK file's name implies that it is a version intended for use with Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The new folder will stop spam SMS messages from getting to your main Messages view. It is called "cross-country" in the strings.

It seems that even when a message ends up in the cross-country spam folder, you will still receive a notification. You can choose not to receive any notifications about it, though. According to a string, "Conversation is in the blocked/spam/cross-country folder, skipping notification creation."

A fresh defence against spam and phishing

There were already several levels of spam protection included in Google Messages, including a standard spam folder. On the other hand, the newly developed folder will pay particular attention to identifying foreign phishing or spam. In this manner, you may steer clear of any scams and maintain your primary Google Messages screen free of unsolicited messages. Last but not least, Google has not yet announced a date for the cross-country folder deployment; perhaps, this will happen soon.
