The Screenshots app on the Pixel 9 now has the Gemini integration that it should have had from the beginning

One of the main topics of discussion when Google unveiled the Pixel 9 series earlier this year was Pixel Screenshots. The program makes it simple to subsequently recover pertinent information by using AI to extract metadata from your screenshots. Simply ask, and the program will retrieve the desired content. However, with a recent upgrade, it's becoming even better.

Google also announced the October 2024 Feature Drop for Pixel smartphones in conjunction with the introduction of Android 15. Additionally, it adds the Gemini Extension for Pixel Screenshots as one of its new features. Up until now, searching for the data you saved required you to launch the Pixel Screenshots app and either type or use voice commands.

During my time with the Pixel 9 Pro XL, I actually used the Pixel Screenshots app less frequently because of this added step. It felt superfluous to have to launch the app in order to locate what I was looking for, especially since Google often places everything related to searches front and center. Fortunately, this process is made even simpler by the recently released Gemini integration.

Google Gemini makes the Pixel Screenshots app more intelligent.

According to Google, you can now utilize Gemini to locate saved objects in Pixel Screenshots without opening the app. Today, all you have to do is say, "Hey Google, use Screenshots to find the brand of sneakers I saved," and Gemini will look up the necessary information in the Pixel Screenshots app.

Even while you still have to say "use Screenshots," this integration makes the process go much more quickly than with the prior approach. With the most recent update, this function will be accessible on all Pixel 9 series models in the US, Canada, Ireland, Australia, India, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Google has been testing new Gemini integrations for well-known apps like WhatsApp, Spotify, and Google Messages in addition to Pixel Screenshots, though they aren't yet live. In order to perfect and provide the Gemini assistant we've been waiting for, the business is taking its sweet time. A few helpful extensions that improve the Gemini experience have already been released, even though these significant integrations are still in the works. (*)
