YouTube Is Testing Eliminating the "Dislike" Button From the Main Shorts User Interface

In an effort to make it simpler for users to return to their favourite Shorts videos within the app, YouTube is testing a new "Save" button for Shorts. Additionally, the "Dislike" option will be removed from the Shorts main user interface.

it might have a greater effect.

The "Like" and "Dislike" icons are located at the top of the right-hand function icons in the current YouTube Shorts player, as demonstrated in this example. The most recent version of Shorts also features a "Remix" icon at the bottom of this list.

However, for participants in this new test, the "Save" button will replace the thumbs down indicator.

As YouTube explains:

We're testing a "Save" option in the Shorts player to make it simpler to bookmark Shorts you love, want to revisit, or want to watch later. The 'Save' icon is visible to test group viewers, and they can use it to save Shorts to a playlist, either fresh or old. We rearranged our Shorts player menu to make place for the Save button. The 3-dot menu icon now contains the "Dislike" button in this trial. Click the three dots in the upper right corner of the short you're viewing, then choose "Dislike" from the menu to express your disapproval and provide comments.

Therefore, you can still enjoy Shorts through the main user interface, but you'll have to go a little further to indicate that you don't like a particular clip.

It might have an effect on how you refine your Shorts feed and the Shorts feedback loop. However, considering that YouTube's Shorts algorithm takes into account a number of variables, such as watch duration and interaction, it's possible that it already knows you don't like a particular clip just by watching how quickly you scroll past it.

It is an intriguing change, though, as it does seem that less people are deliberately selecting the dislike choice than the like one when watching Shorts. Which is understandable, but YouTube would have to think twice before deciding to remove this off the front display.

Additionally, the Shorts player already has a "Not interested" option in its three dots menu. So you'll be able to select between the "Dislike" and "Not interested" options now? How philosophically puzzling it is to ask yourself, "Did I dislike it or was I just not interested?" might alter your outlook on life.

To be clear, the three dots menu still has the "Save to Playlist" option; test participants will only see "Dislike" instead of "Save to Playlist."

As of right now, this is just an experiment, so the results could not be significant in any case, but it is still interesting to note for functional and behavioural tendencies.

According to YouTube, this experiment is being made available "to a small number of viewers on mobile devices."YouTube Is Testing Eliminating the "Dislike" Button From the Main Shorts User Interface
