Preview of the Google Pixel 9a: Release Date, Features, Cost, and More

The company's next mid-range phone is the Google Pixel 9a. It is anticipated that the Pixel 8a's successor will arrive in 2025, having arrived in May 2024. The price tags of the "Pixel a" series smartphones are the primary reason for their popularity in the United States. Over the course of the year, Google has gradually increased the prices, but not significantly; they are still quite alluring possibilities for purchases.

We'll keep this post updated because this smartphone did begin to leak some time ago, and we anticipate that the leaks will get more serious in the upcoming months. While we'll fill in the blanks with additional rumors and leaks, we have exclusively provided some details regarding the device. Having said that, how about we check out what the Pixel 9a has to offer?

As fresh information on the Google Pixel 9a (this is a preview article) becomes available in the lead-up to the debut of the upcoming Android smartphone, this article will be updated often to include both official teases and reliable leaks, rumors, and insider claims. October 7, 2024, was the latest update.

What is the anticipated release date of the Google Pixel 9a?

The Pixel 9a won't be available anytime soon. Although there have been several rumors and leaks, the Pixel 9a is not anticipated to be released until the following year. Now, the Pixel 9a was anticipated to come around the same time as the Pixel 8a in May 2024, during Google I/O. But the word "was" is emphasized. The phone will arrive sooner than anticipated, as we have exclusively disclosed. More precisely, the Pixel 9a will ship in mid-March 2025, which is also when it will be available for pre-order. Therefore, it will arrive roughly two months earlier than anticipated. This is consistent with what transpired with the flagship Pixel 9 series. By the way, there are also rumors that Android 16 will be released much earlier than usual. According to rumors, Android 16 will be released in Q2 2025 rather than Q4 2025, as is customary.

Which models will be arriving?

Google only released one Pixel 8a model last year, and we anticipate that the Pixel 9a will follow suit. Although the phone will probably have multiple storage options, only one will be available. We won't be receiving a model that is smaller and larger or anything like to what we previously received. Actually, it might be about the same size as the Pixel 8a. That phone had a 6.1-inch screen, but it was a little bigger than flagship smartphones with the same screen size since its bezels were not as thin. The similar pattern might apply to the Pixel 9a. Google might continue to provide the 128GB and 256GB storage options that were available for the Pixel 8a. That is, unless the business decides to switch to a storage option that combines 256GB and 512GB, which is less likely.

What is the price of the Google Pixel 9a?

The cost of the Google Pixel 9a has not yet been made public. The price tag, though, might be very comparable to that of the Pixel 8a. Recall that the initial pricing of the Pixel 8a was $499. If we were to predict, Google will either add $50 to the price tag or keep it at the same level for its successor. Therefore, if we had to guess, the price would be either $499 or $549. Naturally, this is assuming that the business will continue to use the 128GB storage model. The price may be $549 or even $599 if the 256GB storage option is become the standard model, though the latter is less likely. Adding $100 to the price of the Pixel 8a might be a tad excessive. Making this phone as inexpensive as feasible is its main goal.

How is the Google Pixel 9a going to look?

This is one particular information that did come to light on a few occasions. A real-life picture of the Pixel 9a appeared online back in August. CAD-based renders that we released exclusively came next. The camera island section on the rear of those two designs differs somewhat. A tiny camera bump may be seen in the phone's real-world photo. The same pill-shaped design is depicted in the CAD-based renderings we displayed, but the hump and the bezel surrounding the camera are absent. We can't be certain, but it's probable that the actual phone image was only one of the prototypes.

This time, the sides will be flat.

In any case, you may view the Pixel 9a's design by visiting the gallery at the conclusion of this section. In order to accommodate other Pixel 9 devices, Google is redesigning the phone to have flat surfaces on all sides. The sides of the Pixel 8a's frame were rounded. In order to make the Pixel 9a more comfortable to handle, its flat sides do slope toward the corners. Naturally, metal—likely aluminum—will be used to make the frame. The front will have a flat screen with a camera hole in the middle. Although they will be tiny, the bezels won't be as thin as those on the Pixel 9 Pro series.

No camera bump will occur at all.

The two cameras and an LED flash are carved out in the shape of a pill on the back. The phone's back has the cutout in the upper-left corner. As usual, Google's logo will be positioned in the center of the backplate. The power/lock key will be positioned above the volume up and down buttons, while all of the phone's physical buttons will be on the right side. It's also important to note that the phone's back will be made of glass rather than plastic. Although we don't yet know, the smartphone itself is anticipated to be roughly the same size as the Pixel 8a.

There are four color variations available.

There will be four color options for the Google Pixel 9a at launch. The colors that we have exclusively unveiled are porcelain, peony, iris, and obsidian. As of right now, you are all well acquainted with the colors porcelain and obsidian. To put it another way, they are the black and white hues that we have seen on several Pixels thus far. The Iris color will be a bluish-purple choice, while the Peony color will resemble the Peony Pixel 9.

What specifications can we expect from the Google Pixel 9a?

What are the specifications of the phone? And now, well, that is a real mystery. The phone will have the Tensor G4 chip, which is the only information that leaked. Given that the "Pixel a" series smartphones use the same SoC as the flagship models in the series, that was to be expected. It's noteworthy to note, though, that the Pixel 9a can come with an outdated modem. The upgraded modem found in the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold significantly improves battery life and connection. Therefore, it would be good to see it in the Pixel 9a as well. But according to a recent rumor, that won't occur.

The flagship Pixel 9 series' chip will be used in it.

Apart from the Tensor G4 chip, the Pixel 9a's specifications might be pretty comparable to those of its predecessor. It is anticipated to come with a 6.1- or 6.2-inch flat OLED panel display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Google is probably going to provide the phone at least two storage choices and 8GB of RAM. We'll see, but we anticipate that there will be 128GB and 256GB models. However, there won't be any plans to expand storage. Both cable and wireless charging will be available, and the phone's battery is expected to have a capacity of about 4,500mAh. Along with dual speakers and an official IP classification for dust and water resistance, the Pixel 9a will come pre-installed with either Android 15 or Android 16. We'll see. Android 16 is expected to launch as early as Q2 2025. The cameras on the phone are still a mystery.

It will be thinner, wider, and taller.

Compared to its predecessor, the phone will be somewhat broader and taller. It will measure 73 mm in width and 154 mm in height. Thus, it is roughly 1 mm wider and 2 mm taller than the Pixel 8a. Additionally, the Pixel 9a will be slightly narrower at 8.5mm than its predecessor's 8.9mm.

Is it better to wait to get the Google Pixel 9a?

Right now, the Pixel 9a launch is still a long way off. The Pixel 8a won't see a significant improvement from that phone. Therefore, purchasing the Pixel 8a might not be a bad choice if you need a phone right away. Of course, getting the Pixel 9 is a smart move if you have the money to do so. For $499, the Pixel 8a is unquestionably a fantastic smartphone if money is tight. The great majority of individuals will be satisfied with its performance, and we have liked using it. It will still be a while before the Google Pixel 9a is released. Since many of its specifics are yet unknown, we could still be surprised by the phone. But right now, the Pixel 8a is a good investment. (*)
