On the US mainland are 48 states in all.  Alaska and Hawaii are the US states that are isolated from the main continent in the meantime.


Rhode Island is the smallest state in the union. Washington, the nation's capital, is located next to the District of Columbia, the federal capital territory established in 1790.

Alaska and Hawaii are the US states that are divided from the US mainland. Alaska is situated near the northwest extremity of the continent.

Hawaii is situated approximately 2,000 miles (3,200 km) from the US southwest and in the center of the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, the only US state that is made up of an island chain is Hawaii. 


Hawaii became a part of the United States in 1898 after Queen Liliuokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch, was overthrown by the US.


Additionally, the US has a number of territories in the Caribbean and Pacific. 


Rhode Island is the smallest state in the union. The Northeastern United States' New England region is where Rhode Island is situated.


Rhode Island is the second most populated state in the US behind New Jersey, while being the smallest.


The estimated population of the state of Rhode Island is 1.1 million. Rhode Island shares borders with Massachusetts and Connecticut.
