Review of the Google Pixel 8A: Clearly Better Than the Pixel 8

The Pixel 8A, priced at $499, surpasses Google's more expensive phone.

I have one major question after using Google's new $499 (£499, AU$849) Pixel 8A: Why would anyone pay an additional $200 for the $699 Pixel 8? Google's more expensive phone feels out of place in the Pixel series since the Pixel 8A hits all the right notes, despite a few noticeable changes between the two.

In a time when tech titans are packing the Pixel 8A with eye-catching new AI functions, the device feels pleasantly straightforward. It doesn't add anything new, but it does inherit some of the AI features and techniques from Pixel 8, such as Circle to Search and Best Take.

It's not a negative thing, either. Because it provides excellent value at a price that seems reasonable and approachable, the Pixel 8A excels at the fundamentals. Considering Google's history of adding new features to Pixel phones over time, we may anticipate it to get even more intelligent. It's difficult to say what it was that I liked using the Pixel 8A the best because it's not about a single enhancement but rather the way everything works together.

Sales and discounts are a major factor that would make purchasing the Pixel 8 worthwhile in its place. The Pixel 8 can occasionally be discounted by carriers and stores to almost equal the cost of the Pixel 8A. Additionally, a few cellular service carriers run deals that effectively give the Pixel 8 away for free.

But those offers usually come with conditions, like adding a new line on a specified plan or trading in a device that qualifies. Additionally, discounts run out, so you might not always be able to find the Pixel 8 for less money. Google frequently offers discounts on its A-series smartphones, so the Pixel 8A might soon be on sale for less money as well.

For Android enthusiasts who wish to keep well below the $1,000 threshold, the Pixel 8A is likely the best option—that is, unless you can find the Pixel 8 for $500 or less at a discount.
